A deck is carpentry outdoors, and most of what makes a good one is out of sight. Before any boards go down, the ground is cleared, a weed membrane is laid and the frame is set on posts or pads so it sits level and stays clear of the soil. Joists go in at the right spacing for the boards chosen, with a gap underneath so air can move and the timber dries out after rain.
Get that part right and the deck feels solid underfoot for years; get it wrong and it starts to bounce, rot or shift. On the boards themselves, timber is cheaper to lay and looks natural, but it wants an oil or stain now and then to keep it looking good. Composite costs more up front, needs very little looking after and will not splinter, which suits families with children and dogs.
Grooved boards give better grip in shaded or damp corners. Raised decks are where the design matters most. A deck off the back door on a sloping garden needs steps that land somewhere sensible, a balustrade where the drop calls for one and a clean join to the patio or lawn below.
